Developers of popular emulation software create a program that tricks game ROMs\u2014that is, copies made from cartridge- and disc-based games, that you can store on your computer\u2014into thinking they are running on original hardware. These are the emulators you download to your computer or which come preinstalled in retro TV consoles like the NES Classic. Software emulation can be great. It can also be flawed. Some games run poorly, graphics get distorted, sound gets garbled. The games can exhibit slowdown and input lag not present on original hardware.
